We install both Control4 and KNX. The question we get on almost every residential enquiry is which one to pick. There is no universal winner. There is a house, a cabling window, and a family who will actually live with the result.

KNX, in one paragraph

KNX is an open standard. Devices from many manufacturers speak the same bus. Lighting and HVAC are first-class. The programming is documented. Another certified integrator can take over years later. It wants cable in the wall, which is cheap at slab stage and expensive after the painter has left.

Control4, in one paragraph

Control4 is a dealer-installed platform with a very strong entertainment and user-interface story — one remote, one app, music, video, lighting and climate in a single experience. It can run hybrid wired and wireless, which helps in a finished house. It is not an open bus in the KNX sense; you stay in the Control4 dealer world for programming and service.

How we decide on a survey

Still at slab or first-fix, lighting-and-climate heavy, owner wants an open standard → KNX is usually the backbone
House is finished, AV and multi-room audio are the brief, walls should stay intact → Control4 is often cleaner
Large villa that needs both a robust lighting bus and a serious cinema → we will discuss a split, not a religion
The owner only wants bulbs and a speaker → we will say so and decline; that is not our work

Either way, the job is the same: survey, specify, install, program, train, support. Brand logos on a slide do not commission a house.
