Most people who search for home automation are shown a speaker, a few bulbs and an app. KNX is a different category of work. It is an open, worldwide standard for building control — lighting, climate, shading, security contacts, energy metering — running on a dedicated bus in the wall, not on your home Wi-Fi.

That distinction matters in a luxury villa. Wi-Fi devices drop off when the ISP hiccups, fight with neighbours' networks, and get orphaned when a brand shuts an app. A KNX installation is specified, wired, programmed and handed over as a system. The house still works if the internet is down.

What sits on a KNX bus

In the homes we design, the bus typically carries lighting (scenes, dimming, colour temperature), HVAC setpoints and occupancy, motorised curtains or blinds, garden and façade lighting on astronomical clocks, and inputs from door contacts or motion sensors. Voice or a phone app can sit on top. They are a remote, not the brain.

When we specify KNX rather than Control4

KNX is usually the better backbone when the house is still at slab or first-fix, when the owner wants an open standard, or when lighting and climate are the centre of the brief. Control4 is often the better fit when AV and entertainment are the centre, or when a finished house cannot take a full extra cable run. We choose after a survey, not from a brand loyalty sheet.
