Smart-home audio
When we design smart home audio, small spaces are the hardest to get right. Kitchens, walk-in wardrobes and bathrooms need clear, room-filling sound, but a traditional architectural speaker system is overkill for rooms this size. It also needs messy wiring and expensive external amplifiers, which pushes it out of budget.
After a little debate, our tech team proposed a different approach: use compact smart speakers, such as the Amazon Echo or Google Nest, and mount them directly into the false ceiling. After researching the options, we found a clever, modern solution: repurposing compact smart speakers by mounting them into false ceilings with custom 3D-printed mounts.
Why the ceiling?
Kitchens, bathrooms and wardrobes each present their own audio challenges:
Counter space is premium. Kitchen prep areas and bathroom vanities are usually crowded. Lifting the device off the surface keeps it clean and clutter-free.
Safety and protection. Keeping electronics off wet counters protects them from sink splashes and spills.
Better sound spread. Ceiling placement lets sound fall evenly across the whole room, avoiding the dead zones created by cabinets or clothing racks.
Why 3D-printed mounts?
Smart speakers come in non-standard sizes and the models keep changing, so off-the-shelf ceiling brackets rarely fit snugly. 3D printing closes that gap.
1.Custom enclosures. A lightweight, vented ring or sleeve is designed for the exact speaker model, holding it securely with a friction fit or retaining clips.
2.Acoustic transparency. The face of the mount has an engineered grille pattern or open cavity, so voice commands are heard clearly and the speaker's downward-firing sound is not blocked.
3.Flush finish. Spring-loaded wings, similar to those on recessed downlights, lock the mount neatly into a standard round hole cut in a gypsum or drop ceiling.

Room by room
The kitchen. Mount a speaker above the island or prep zone to stream cooking playlists or run several hands-free timers, safe from flour and grease.
The wardrobe. Flush-mount a device to stream the morning news or upbeat music while getting dressed, with no visible wires.
The bathroom. Enjoy relaxing background audio during a bath, with the device kept clear of direct water. Ensure proper ventilation and check local electrical codes for power routing in wet zones.

Key considerations
Material. In a humid bathroom, print the mount in a heat- and moisture-resistant filament such as PETG or ABS rather than standard PLA.
Power. Route a low-voltage USB cable through the false-ceiling cavity to a nearby concealed power source or junction box.
Access. Design the mount so the speaker can be popped out easily whenever its physical buttons or reset need to be reached.
The result
With 3D printing, an everyday smart speaker becomes a sleek, built-in fixture, giving a custom, high-end architectural look without the cost of a traditional ceiling speaker system.
